CAN ANTIBIOTIC USE INTERFERE WITH THYROID MEDICATION?
According to the journal Thyroid, antibiotics such as Cipro, Proquin, Levoquin, and other quinolone antibiotics decreased the absorption of thyroid hormone medications.
If this interference occurs, it can create more hypothyroid symptoms.
On the other side, antibiotics such as rifampin increased the absorption of thyroid medication, which could lead to overmedicating and hyperthyroid symptoms.
Two suggestions that can help with this concern:
- Some studies have shown that taking the medication apart from the antibiotic by 6 or more hours has been effective. Not everyone is agreeing on this.
- Ask your doctor to help identify if the antibiotic you are prescribed can work with your thyroid medication. You can do this even before the prescription is filled.
- Make sure you keep check on your digestive health by supplementing with probiotics that are specifically needed by you. You can get this checked by your choice of wholistic practioner or by biome testing.
