HOW SAFE ARE STEVIA PRODUCTS?

I usually have a few people a week that ask if the sweeteners they use are safe. Stevia is the popular go to, and I too use it often, and love it. A few individuals I’ve met with appear to feel weakened after they ingest it. After looking into it a bit more, here are a few things I will share to keep in mind.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself when shopping:

  • How is it processed?
  • Where does it comes from?
  • Does it have fillers?

Many Stevia products out there are bleached and processed just like aspartame, Sweet n Low, Equal, etc.

Some contain fillers and binders, that help with bitter taste and increase sweetness. Make sure there is no maltodextrin, or GMO erythritol, inulin, and even cane sugars.

Most producers are sugar giants that are in association with big corporations in the soft drink business. The market is flooded with Stevia from China and not from Peru or South America like they suggest. There’s nothing wrong with China, just watch if they tell the truth where it comes from.

If you are concerned about making the wrong decision, try growing your own – it certainly takes the worry out of it!

Be well,
Dr. Motley
