TRAUMA IN THE BRAIN
Much literature and even I have referred to the brain as a computer, but it is SO much more than that. It is faster, quicker, more powerful than any computer that will ever be made. In psychology research, they state that the amount of power your brain produces is comparable to nuclear power, no joke. So powerful that the brain has the ability to regenerate and GROW at faster rates than any other organ.
The brain is a responsive organ. It’s main job is not to initiate actions or thoughts (which it does), but to respond to stress or stimulation from somewhere else in the body. It attempts to keep all systems in balance and coordination, the yin and yang.
For example, you touch a hot stove top, you pull your hand away before you get burned. The brain tries to keep you from experiencing pain from the stress you receive-by monitoring stress all the time.
Trauma comes in the form verbal, physical, emotional or mental abuse. The research is so in depth that psychology has identified new types of abuse with terms that I would like to read more about. With any abuse, it is a tough journey, and anyone that goes through it must give themselves time and love.
If trauma keeps occurring, it will continuously bombard the brain with pain signals. The brain responds and tries to keep the stress signal at a low enough rate so the body does not over react. The trauma can be so great that the brain knows it could break down the body-it is helping you stay alive. This constant trauma can create pain circuits throughout the body.
If the there has not been a release of the trauma, layering can occur as the body gets used to the trauma. The pain circuits keep firing at the expense of your adrenals and thyroid. As new stress and trauma occur the body layers new pain circuits on top of the old ones to handle the new load. The brain literally grows new nerves to keep you functioning, a field called neuroplasticity (Check it out).
As the pain circuits keep firing over long periods of time, it causes the circuits to grow and become stronger. So the smallest triggers can create huge responses. And with layering trauma upon trauma, you can have a reaction to a trigger unrelated to the original stress event. That is when you know the brain is overwhelmed and trauma release needs to happen.
Remember the subconscious mind never forgets an event. It stores all trauma in cell memory, whether you are conscious or not at the time of the event. Time to start peeling them away.
There are many techniques that I have observed help patients with trauma. i will give recommendations only through personal experience and observation. I have used certain techniques in the office that utilize Kinesiology and the Acupuncture meridians to help alleviate stress load so that the brain has enough space and energy to go and unstack the layers for release. Each organ and meridian in the body has an emotion tied to it, and balancing the organs and meridians helps give energy to the brain to go do what it needs to do.
I am not a counsellor or claim to do any psychotherapy. I have many friends in that field, and am fascinated with the conversations I have with them on this subject. I have seen great results with combining with these techniques. Please read on them and visit the websites, they have so much info that can help anyone with trauma.
